Digital Security

There are many Digital threats that we face every single day of our lives due to the way we use the internet. Below is a list of the top 5 cybersecurity threats that South Africa faced in 2015.

5) Insecure passwords: These are passwords that are short, uncomplicated or common. Passwords like these are easy to hack which makes it easier for hackers to get peoples’ personal information.

4) Cyber theft: This is when people steal your financial information off the internet. This can happen when a hacker hacks your password for an online shopping account or an online bank account. This can also happen through internet phishing schemes.

3)Cyber-espionage: This occurs when your information is obtained through the internet and used by the government for whatever purpose. Your information can be obtained through online accounts or even through surveys etc.

2) The internet of things: This is when more than one device is connected to the internet using the same details. This reduces your overall security because the security on mobile devices may not be as good as that of laptops or desktop computers. Consistencies may also be found to make hacking passwords easier.

1) Ransom-ware: Ransom-ware is a form of malware. This malware infects your computer and blocks the user from accessing certain parts of their computer. The user must then pay a certain price to gain access to these parts again.

All of these threats are caused by people sharing their information online. Whether it’s for social media, or for making online purchases or even for contracts and banking. This can be avoided by only supplying the necessary information on websites and making sure that passwords are long and complex. Passwords should also not be used for many different accounts.

Techno-economic paradigm is the term for a pattern observed by a man named Freeman, who observed, that ICTs only seem to increase productivity if the employees had the skills to use the technology. Once the divide has been closed and more and more people can work and understand the technology people will start to understand that If we want to move forward we should ensure that we are teaching our employees before we put them in a job they are not able to do. This way we will be able to go forward faster without any hassle

The discovery was featured as a cover story of National Geographic magazines October 2015 issue. It is said that there is still much more to uncover and there are potentially hundreds if not thousands of remains of homo naledi still in the cave. 

On the 10^th of September, the greatest discovery was found. A new species of human relative was found. This fossil that was found has the closest resemblance to the Homo genus that’s ever been discovered.

This was the single largest fossil collect yet to be found. This new find allows us to shed light on the origins and diversity of our genus, they have called it Homo Naledi named after the Rising Star cave.  Homo Nadeli seem to show behavior of depositing their dead in a cave almost like a burial, this behavior was only though to be limited to humans. They were found in the Rising Star cave in the cradle of humankind world heritage site. The site only being accessible to few people a special team had to be put together.

The team collect 15 individuals from the same cave, “With almost every bone in the body represented multiple times, Homo naledi is already practically the best-known fossil member of our lineage,” said Lee Berger. It is said that Homo naledi are very close to human like features. While being around 1.5 meters tal and weighing about 45 Kgs

The expeditions were conducted in November 2013 and march 2014 over a period of 21 days and more than 50 people working together in one of the most difficult and most dangerous conditions every encountered in the search for human origins. The fossils were analyzed in a unique workshop in May 2014 funded by the South African DST/NRF. More than 50 experience scientists came together to analyze the findings.

The internet of things

The way the world is going now, technology is taking over and this is not considered to be a bad thing. Technology has made a huge positive impact on our daily lives as well as the way businesses and companies are run and the biggest aspect about technology is the internet. Without the internet most devices would not be what they are today. The internet has shaped today’s society and it will continue to do so for many many years.

Who knows how far the internet will take us in the future? Already we have almost any known information at the tip of our fingers. Soon we may even be able to access the internet without even having devices. The internet may become wired into our brains so that we may know anything at any time. This may sound farfetched now, but a few years ago you wouldn’t have believed me if I told you that in the future you can talk to almost anybody in the world with a click of a button. The internet has developed so much and I believe it will continue to get better.

Types of intelligence

In 1983 an American developmental psychologist Howard Gardener described 9 types of intelligence, I shall list and explain 4 in today’s context.

Naturalist (nature smart): In today’s society, going green is a big part of the world. This makes or breaks many of the new and old businesses. E.g. Newer places are thriving because of their new eco-friendly ways whereas older companies are paying hefty taxes and may even be forced to close because of the pollution they let off. These new entrepreneurs are Naturalists.

Logical-mathematical (number/reasoning smart): The number crunchers. These people are the ones that think logically. They are the scientists, the mathematicians and the programmers. These people are constantly working with numbers, codes and algorithms and are critical to today’s society. They are always finding ways to make things better.

Interpersonal (people smart): These people are the ones who are good at socializing and reading people. They are the marketers, the comedians and the psychologists. They exist to interact with people in many different ways, whether it be to help them or to entertain them. These people are important to society because they make everything more fun and enjoyable.

Musical (sound smart): These are the people that are musically inclined. They are the musicians, the DJ’s and the sound technicians. Sound plays a big role in our lives. It is everywhere. The sounds on the radios, on our phones, in the elevator, car hooters and many more. All of these man made sounds have been carefully thought out and manufactured by musically inclined people. These people are important to society because the sounds that they make not only entertain people, but they are also key to most real life things.

Digital etiquette

Online etiquette is just as important as normal etiquette if not more important. What you say in real life can be forgotten but what you say online can often be saved forever. I shall list some don’ts for internet etiquette.

Ø Racism: Speaks for itself.

Ø Swearing: Swearing isn’t too bad, as everybody on the internet does it but you can’t go over the top about it.

Ø Sexism: Speaks for itself

Ø Disrespect: Just life real life, disrespecting people or people’s cultures is hurtful online. You may not be able to see it but people can be very hurt from online disrespect.

Ø Cyberbullying: This is probably the most serious offence. Ø Trolling: Trolling is a slang work for being stupid on the internet. It is when people do random and very annoying things for the purpose or irritating people.
